Answering
Spirit's Call
Mother
Earth was quiet when we finally left the Dancing Water that night,
still wearing her cloak of fog. I was very tired, in body and
mind, and yet felt very satisfied that everything had gone so
well. I had much to think about and it would consume much of my
time over the next several days. Indeed, to this day, I think
back to that memorable week and remember some small detail, a
particular lesson, and learn a little more about myself, and the
Grandfathers' plan for me.
The
learning never ceases, nor does the Path ever end. I am still
learning, and unlearning - if you take my meaning. I walk the
Path I do because it's how the Grandfathers wish it to be. I am
not a great man and do not aspire to greatness. I am simply one
small child of the Great Mystery, doing my best to answer the
call and spread the message I have been given. My spirit hears
the call and passes it on to me; I try my best to answer. If I
can reach just one other person with my life work, I will leave
this world truly happy.
As
we approached our van, a small area of fog parted, uncovering
a lone star in the sky. It was brighter than any star I'd ever
seen, so bright that shadows sprang from the ground. As I looked
up at it, I heard a wolf howl in the distance. This surprised
me - there are no wolves in that part of the country. But it was
a wolf; of that I am certain.
This
voice could not be mistaken for a coyote, nor any of the wolf's
smaller cousins. Neither was it a dog, the domesticated offspring
of my spirit brother. I knew it was a wolf, and a handsome one.
It was probably gray. Tears came to my eyes at this final gift
of the night, as I realized that the wolf was only doing what
he had to do, regardless of the consequences, what his heart told
him was required if he was to be true to himself. He lifted his
voice and sang to the sky because to not do so would have been
to deny his own existence. You see: like me, he was answering
his spirit's call.
